Emergency warnings along north-west WA coast as Tropical Cyclone Mitchell approaches as category 3 storm

Tropical Cyclone Mitchell is forecast to maintain its category 3 status as it approaches the Pilbara coast in Western Australia, prompting emergency warnings across several areas.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Mitchell is currently located about 30 kilometers offshore from Karratha, Australia, and is expected to retain its category 3 intensity as it moves along the Pilbara coast towards land. The Bureau of Meteorology has reported sustained winds of 120 km/h near the center of the cyclone, with gusts reaching up to 165 km/h. According to senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury, the storm may maintain or even increase in intensity while continuing its south-west trajectory over the water.

Emergency warnings have been issued for a warning zone that extends from Karratha to Cape Cuvier, just north of Carnarvon. This zone is predicted to experience gale force winds and possibly damaging weather conditions. As the cyclone approaches, there is concern for very destructive wind gusts that could reach 195 km/h, which poses a significant threat to the affected areas. Residents have been advised to prepare for severe weather impacts as the cyclone is expected to make landfall late on Sunday or early Monday.

The approach of Tropical Cyclone Mitchell highlights the ongoing risks posed by cyclonic activity in the region, particularly during the peak tropical storm season. With the potential for further intensification, the response and preparedness measures taken by local authorities will be crucial in mitigating damage and ensuring the safety of residents in affected coastal communities. Emergency services are on high alert, and updates from the Bureau of Meteorology will continue to inform the public about the cyclone's progress and expected impacts.
