FG to reopen Kebbi border with Benin Republic
The Nigerian Federal Government plans to reopen the Tsamiya land border with Benin Republic to enhance trans-border trade, with security measures in place to prevent exploitation.
The Nigerian Federal Government, led by President Bola Tinubu, has approved the reopening of the Tsamiya land border between Kebbi State and the Benin Republic, a move that has been welcomed by Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris. This reopening aims to facilitate trans-border trade, which has faced disruptions due to previous border closures. Governor Idris expressed optimism about collaborating with the Customs Service and security agencies to ensure that this trade can resume safely, without compromising national security.
The decision to reopen the border comes in response to concerns voiced by local stakeholders, including exporters, transporters, and onion traders, who have experienced economic hardships due to the prolonged closure. Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, highlighted the government's awareness of these challenges and emphasized the importance of addressing them. During an interactive session held in Kebbi, Adeniyi assured participants that the reopening would follow stringent security protocols to prevent any criminal exploitation of the border area.
The reopening of the Tsamiya border is not only significant for local economic recovery in Kebbi State but also reflects the Federal Government's commitment to engage with stakeholders in addressing critical issues affecting trade and commerce. This strategic decision is expected to boost trade activities and improve the livelihoods of residents involved in cross-border commerce, while maintaining a vigilant approach towards national security concerns associated with such operations.
