Hobart zip-line idea emerges again — but not on the mountain
A new proposal for a 1.13-kilometre zip-line near Hobart is being prepared for submission to the Hobart City Council, following the rejection of a similar project on Kunanyi/Mt Wellington nearly a year prior.
A developer is planning to submit a new proposal for a zip-line project on public land near Hobart, with a plan for a 1.13-kilometre zip-line in the council-owned Ridgeway Reserve. This project would involve constructing a 25-metre high tower near Ridgeway Reservoir, with the zip-line extending to a landing pad close to the Waterworks Reserve. The developers have already shared the plans with nearby residents and anticipate submitting a development application to the Hobart City Council soon.
The proposed zip-line differs from a previous plan on Kunanyi/Mt Wellington that was rejected by the council nearly a year ago, indicating a shift in focus to a different location. The new design features a similar scale but would primarily be constructed on public land, which may influence the perception and acceptance among the local community. The zip-line would offer a thrilling experience, lasting around 90 seconds, and providing scenic views as it traverses the landscape between the two reserves.
As the proposal moves forward, community feedback and council approval will be crucial in determining whether the project progresses. If successful, it could enhance the region's recreational offerings, drawing in tourists and providing a unique outdoor experience. However, it also raises questions of environmental impact and land use, issues that the Hobart City Council will need to carefully assess as they review the application.
