Southern governors condemn Kwara terror attack, urge arrest of perpetrators
The Southern Governors’ Forum denounces the terrorist attacks in Kwara State, resulting in at least 162 deaths and multiple kidnappings.
The Southern Governors’ Forum has expressed their condolences to the Kwara State government and its residents following a series of terrorist attacks that left at least 162 people dead in the villages of Woro and Nuku. These tragic events, attributed to the Islamist sect Lakurawa on February 3, have sparked outrage and concern among regional leaders, who are calling for justice and the immediate arrest of those responsible. The attacks not only inflicted loss of life but also resulted in significant property destruction, which has exacerbated the fears of insecurity in the region.
In a statement released from Abeokuta, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who chairs the Southern Governors’ Forum, condemned the attacks as a heinous crime against innocent civilians. He highlighted the targeted nature of the assaults on villagers who allegedly resisted the imposition of Sharia law, underlining the severity of the threat posed by Islamist extremist groups. Such targeting has raised alarms about religious and ethnic tensions within Nigeria, particularly in regions susceptible to violence from groups like Boko Haram and its affiliates.
The statement further stressed the importance of collective action in confronting terrorism and safeguarding the lives of Nigerian citizens. Abiodun's remarks reflect a broader call for greater security measures and collaboration among various state governments to ensure safety. This incident highlights ongoing challenges in Nigeria regarding terrorism and the need for effective responses to protect vulnerable communities from such brutal acts.
