Farmers end protest with their tractors in front of the Department of Agriculture

Farmers concluded their protest outside the Department of Agriculture, advocating for reforms in bureaucracy and the Mercosur agreement.

Farmers ended their protest on Saturday in front of the Department of Agriculture of the Generalitat, after having gathered with dozens of tractors and private vehicles, blocking the Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes. The protest aimed to draw attention to their grievances regarding bureaucratic obstacles and the impact of the Mercosur trade agreement on their livelihoods. Following the conclusion of the protest, traffic was resumed in the area, and the local government removed soil that had been used to simulate a farm on the road.

This protest coincided with the second anniversary of a significant farmers' demonstration that had previously paralyzed Barcelona and many roads in February 2024. The farmers, represented by the platform Revolta Pagesa, sought to highlight ongoing issues affecting the agricultural sector and to propose solutions to alleviate these challenges. Their demands included reducing bureaucratic burdens and seeking a review of the terms of the Mercosur agreement, which they believe jeopardizes local farmers' competitiveness.

The conclusion of this protest emphasizes the continuing discontent among farmers regarding their working conditions and governmental support. The agricultural community is increasingly vocal about its challenges and remains committed to advocating for reforms that address their needs. The local government’s response in clearing the area suggests an intention to restore normality and possibly engage more directly with the farmers’ concerns in the future.
