VIDEO: thunderstorms with hail knock down trees and cause river to overflow in SC
Severe thunderstorms with hail caused significant damage in Santa Catarina, Brazil, knocking down trees and leading to the overflow of a local river, but no injuries were reported.
On Saturday, a series of severe thunderstorms brought hail to cities in the Midwestern and Serra regions of Santa Catarina, Brazil, causing widespread damage, particularly in Lages where trees were knocked down and streets were flooded. The storms began around 11 AM, prompting responses from both the Civil Defense and the Military Fire Brigade; fortunately, no injuries were reported. Emergency teams conducted 24 interventions primarily related to fallen trees obstructing roads, with the water levels in the affected areas beginning to recede later in the day.
The overflow of the CarΓ‘ River in Lages led to some localized flooding of streets, necessitating municipal monitoring of the situation. Despite the flooding, emergency services have indicated that the impacts of the storm were manageable, and other than the tree fall incidents, no serious situations arose from the weather event. Additionally, strong winds during the storm damaged temporary structures set up for community events, but the Civil Defense reported that these were the only substantial issues related to wind damage.
This incident highlights the vulnerability of certain regions to severe weather phenomena, which can disrupt local infrastructure and public safety. Authorities are likely to assess the damage further and consider preventive measures for future weather events to mitigate disruptions and ensure community safety in the face of increasingly unpredictable climatic conditions.
