Two rare infectious diseases spreading in Moscow – Health authority: 'The situation is under control'
Health officials in Moscow report cases of monkeypox and chikungunya fever, stating that the situation is under control.
In recent days, the Moscow region has reported cases of two rare infectious diseases: monkeypox and chikungunya fever, according to Russian health authorities. Notably, the 'M-pox' infections, caused by the monkeypox virus, have been identified, with one patient currently hospitalized in an infectious disease unit. Health officials assure that the patient's condition is stable and under control, indicating effective health response protocols.
The Federal Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing Surveillance Service (Rospotrebnadzor) has carried out investigations to track individuals who may have been in contact with the infected patients. These individuals have been placed under medical supervision and isolation as a precautionary measure. Additionally, thorough disinfection procedures have been implemented in the patients' residences to prevent further spread of the virus.
Furthermore, a second patient suspected of having monkeypox has been admitted to Domodedovo hospital after coming into contact with the previously confirmed case. This patient is reported to be in moderate condition. Given the rarity of M-pox infections and the measures taken by health officials, the situation appears to be managed effectively, but it raises awareness regarding the potential for such diseases to re-emerge in urban settings, particularly regarding public health preparedness and response planning.
