Electoral Act: NBA demands mandatory electronic transmission of results
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is calling for an amendment to the Electoral Amendment Bill to require the electronic transmission of election results to enhance transparency.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has made a strong appeal to the National Assembly to approve an amendment to the Electoral Amendment Bill concerning the electronic transmission of election results. This amendment, specifically aimed at Clause 60, Subsection 3 of the bill, is viewed as essential for advancing electoral transparency in Nigeria. The call to action was part of a statement issued by the NBA’s National Executive Council following a meeting held in Maiduguri, Borno State. In the statement, the NBA President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), expounded on the critical need for this amendment, emphasizing that real-time transmission of results is necessary to bolster public confidence in the electoral process. The proposal envisions that once Form EC8A, which is the results form, is duly signed and processed by election officials and party agents, results should be immediately uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing portal. This step is seen as vital in assuring voters of the integrity of the electoral process. However, the statement from the NBA also highlighted a concern regarding the Senate's decision to retain the manual transmission of results as an option. This dual approach is seen as potentially undermining the credibility and efficiency of the electoral exercise, causing further debates on the necessity of complete electronic transmission to ensure a more transparent and trustworthy electoral framework in Nigeria.
