Latvian luge athletes Kristers Aparjods and Gints Bērziņš are competing in the first run of men's luge during the Olympic Games.
The Olympic Games are currently taking place in the vast region of Northern Italy, featuring an exciting luge event where experienced Latvian competitors are participating. Kristers Aparjods is set to start third, followed closely by Gints Bērziņš. The first run includes the top-ranked athletes, who are considered strong contenders for medals based on their previous performances.
The luge track has been specifically designed for the competition, with a total length of 1,445 meters and 16 curves. The starting height is situated at 1,321 meters above sea level, descending to a finishing height of 1,255 meters. This track will test the athletes to the limit, with a maximum gradient of 18% and a drop of 107 meters. The luge competition will feature multiple runs, with the first and second runs taking place on Saturday, while the final two runs, which will determine the medal placements, are scheduled for Sunday evening.
Women’s luge competitions will commence on the following Monday and Tuesday, with doubles teams from both men's and women's categories competing for medals on Wednesday. The final set of medals in luge will be awarded on Thursday during the team relay event.
