Spanish Farmers on the Storm: Crops Such as Broccoli and Carrots Are Under Water

Spanish farmers report extensive flooding of crops due to severe storms, resulting in significant economic losses.

Farmers in Spain have raised alarms over the devastating impacts of heavy rains and strong winds that have swept the country this week, leading to the flooding of fields and damage worth millions of euros to their crops. The Iberian Peninsula, also affecting Portugal, has been plagued by a series of storms characterized by heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, snow, and strong winds, complicating the lives of local residents who are bracing for extreme weather conditions.

As storm Marta hits the Iberian Peninsula today, farmers are growing increasingly concerned. Miguel Angel Perez, from the agricultural organization COAG, spoke to Spanish television TVE, expressing the dire situation where crops such as broccoli, carrots, and cauliflower are submerged in water. He emphasized that thousands of hectares are flooded, declaring the event a natural disaster exacerbated by the recent climatic events.

Furthermore, Perez noted that this storm has already caused millions of euros in damages to this year's crops, prompting farmers to seek government assistance for recovery efforts. The repercussions of this storm are significant, as more than 11,000 individuals have had to evacuate their homes in southern Spain’s Andalusia region, with nearly 170 roads affected by the flooding. This crisis highlights the growing vulnerability of agriculture to climate change and extreme weather events, necessitating urgent responses from both local authorities and the national government.
