Prime Minister Fico sees no room for electing Žilinka's successor in the current parliament

Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that there is no legal basis for prematurely dismissing the Attorney General without specific circumstances defined by law, casting doubt on the feasibility of electing a successor before the next parliamentary elections.

In a recent statement, Prime Minister Robert Fico asserted that the current government lacks the legal tools to convene an early recall of the Attorney General unless certain legislative conditions are met. During the 'Saturday Dialogues' broadcast, Fico addressed remarks made by his party colleague Robert Kaliňák, who suggested that the National Council could potentially elect a successor to the Attorney General, Maroš Žilinka, whose term lasts until December 2027. Fico emphasized that with parliamentary elections scheduled for September 2027, the political environment would become increasingly dominated by pre-election campaigns by the middle of 2027, making any decision on the Attorney General's future impractical within that timeframe.
