Intense rains cause flooding, runoff, and landslides in cities of Southern Minas

Heavy rainfall in Southern Minas Gerais has led to flooding, mudslides, and significant damage in several municipalities.

Recent heavy rainfall in Southern Minas Gerais has resulted in significant disruptions across multiple cities, including São Sebastião da Bela Vista, São João da Mata, and Pouso Alto. According to Brazil's Civil Defense, these storms, which intensified due to a phenomenon known as "cabeça d’água," have caused flash flooding, property damage, and landslides. Emergency responses are underway to assist affected families and assess the extent of the damages.

In São Sebastião da Bela Vista, torrential rain led to strong runoff that inundated homes in the Areião and Goiabal neighborhoods. Many residents lost furniture, clothing, and food supplies, as water and mud seeped into their homes. The local infrastructure has also suffered from damage, with streets and rural roads being severely impacted, although assessments of the total economic losses are still ongoing.

In São João da Mata, rainfall similarly caused significant distress, adding pressure on local resources. Efforts are being made by the Civil Defense to provide immediate assistance to those affected while documenting the broader impact of the disaster. As the situation develops, communities are bracing for continued rainfall and the potential for further complications regarding infrastructure and safety.
