Bandits burn 11 houses in Benue, security forces repel attack
Security forces successfully repelled an attack by suspected bandits on Anwase village in Benue State, despite significant property damage.
In Anwase village, located in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, suspected bandits launched an invasion, resulting in the burning of 11 houses. Security operatives responded quickly, repelling the attack and ensuring no casualties among the residents, according to the State Command spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet. Local sources reported that some residents sustained injuries, highlighting the turmoil caused by the recent violence in the area.
The incident took place on Friday, shortly after a similar attack on the neighboring village of Abande, where six individuals, including a mobile police officer, lost their lives. This pattern of violence has raised concerns among the local populations, as communities grapple with the threat posed by banditry and the safety of their inhabitants. The situation in Anwase underscores the increasing instability in certain parts of Nigeria, particularly in states like Benue, where such attacks have become more frequent.
Former local councillor Lawrence Akerigbe commented on the event, stressing the need for a stronger security presence and community support to prevent future attacks. Residents of Anwase and surrounding areas remain on high alert, and the ongoing conflict poses serious implications for local governance and community livelihood as fear continues to grip the region.
