The term 'grooming' will be replaced with 'enticement'
Latvia will officially replace the term 'grooming' with 'enticement' in communications to describe the manipulative process involving emotional connections, often with minors, for exploitative purposes.
In an official announcement by the Terminology Commission of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, it has been decided that the term 'grooming' will be replaced with 'ievilināšana', or 'enticement', in future official communications. This change comes as part of a broader effort to ensure that language used in discussions around child safeguarding is accurate and reflective of the processes involved in such manipulative situations.
The commission defines 'ievilināšana' as a prolonged, targeted, and manipulative process conducted either in person or online. During this process, the enticer gradually builds an emotional connection with a person, often a child or young adult, and exploits the trust gained for malicious purposes, including sexual exploitation. This definition highlights the seriousness of the issue and the need for clear terminology in safeguarding discussions.
The decision to amend this terminology was made upon the request of the Ministry of Welfare, reflecting a proactive stance by the Latvian government in addressing concerns around child safety and the prevention of sexual exploitation. By clarifying the language used to describe such manipulative tactics, authorities hope to increase awareness and improve protective measures for vulnerable populations, particularly minors.
