An Estonian co-produced film, 'Kõrvalosa', has won two awards at the Rotterdam International Film Festival.
The Estonian film 'Kõrvalosa,' co-produced by Ana Urushadze, has achieved recognition at the prestigious Rotterdam International Film Festival (IFFR), where it won both a jury special award and an award from international film critics. This festival is among Europe's most significant platforms for auteur cinema, focusing on new cinematic languages and emerging directors, showcasing bold artistic styles in filmmaking.
The festival's main competitive section, the Tiger Competition, features screenplays from around the globe, and from the 12 films that made the cut, a total of three awards were conferred: a grand prize of €40,000 and two jury special awards worth €10,000 each. Urushadze’s piece secured one of the jury special awards, while the grand prize went to Jason Jacobsi and Devon Delmari's film 'Variations on a Theme.' The other jury special award was given to the Swedish-Norwegian co-production 'La belle année,' directed by Angelica Ruffier.
In addition to the jury accolades, 'Kõrvalosa' was also honored with an award from international film journalists, further solidifying its impact and increasing its visibility within the international film community. The success at IFFR highlights the growing recognition of Estonian cinema on global platforms, promoting local talent on an international stage and showcasing the diversity of storytelling emerging in the Baltic region.
