New York could approach its historical record of cold this weekend due to a new Arctic front: "Lethal conditions"

New York is expected to face potentially record-breaking cold temperatures this weekend as an Arctic front continues to affect the city.

This weekend, New York City may experience some of the coldest temperatures recorded, with actual temperatures projected to plummet to -23.3°C, which could create lethal conditions for residents. The warning was issued by Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a press conference, who emphasized the seriousness of the cold snap that has influenced the city since January.

If forecasts are accurate, this cold spell could mark the third-coldest period in the city's recorded history, only behind the extreme lows of February 9, 1934, when temperatures reached -26°C, and December 30, 1917, with temperatures at -25°C, both historical records maintained by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) at their Central Park observation station.

The ongoing Arctic cold front, which the city has been under for weeks, has also threatened to break the record for consecutive days with temperatures below zero. As New Yorkers brace for this intense cold, city officials are reminding the public to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during these upcoming hazardous weather conditions.
