VIDEO: They wanted him at Dinamo and Zvezda. Now he has debuted on the bench of a Bundesliga team

Albert Riera has made his Bundesliga debut as a coach for Eintracht Frankfurt after previously turning down offers from Croatian clubs Dinamo and Zvezda.

Albert Riera, a Spanish coach who had long been a target for Dinamo Zagreb, has debuted in the Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt. In his first match, which took place in the 21st round against Union Berlin, the game ended in a 1-1 draw, with goals scored late in the match. Riera's team took the lead with a goal from Brown in the 84th minute, only to be equalized by Querfeld from the penalty spot three minutes later.

Before joining Eintracht, Riera had notable success in Slovenia, winning a domestic double with Olimpija in the 2022/23 season. He made a name for himself while managing Celje, where he led the team to a cup victory and an impressive quarter-final run in the Conference League last season. Moreover, during the ongoing season, Riera was instrumental in securing a playoff spot for the knockout phase of the same competition while also maintaining a significant lead in the Slovenian league standings.

Despite interest from Dinamo Zagreb and Red Star Belgrade, Riera opted for the opportunity at Eintracht Frankfurt, demonstrating his ambition to coach at a higher level. His decision underscores a growing trend of Croatian clubs competing for managerial talent and the challenges they face when clubs from larger leagues express interest in their wanted coaches.
